Banyan understands the toll deployment has on veterans and their families

We understand that veteran substance abuse is a growing problem in the US. Many military members suffer from physical injuries and mental health problems when they return from deployment.  Combat today is very different than it was 50+ years ago during World War II and the Vietnam War.  The new war on terror has increased the trauma and emotional toll combat has had on our service members and their families.  Prescription drug abuse is on the rise among veterans because many are treated with addictive narcotic pain medications for injuries. After an extended use, veterans may become dependent on these drugs, and, eventually an addiction can develop.

Veterans in Recovery Program features:

  • An escape for veterans to get away from temptation and their toxic environment
  • Therapeutic programming with staff who are trained and equipped to address veterans and their families
  • Life skills training, education, and reintegration back into society
  • A safe and healthy environment with structure and support
  • Supervised outings, meetings, speaker events, etc.

Psychological symptoms in veterans who do not receive treatment for mental health disorders

During war or conflict, military service members are exposed to many traumatic events. This exposure can increase their chances of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or other mental health problems. Once referred to as “shellshock” and later “battle fatigue,” PTSD can be caused by witnessing warfare or other significantly tragic or startling events.  However, there is hope at our Veterans in Recovery Program. We address these mood and thought disorders with proven therapeutic modalities.

Some symptoms of PTSD include:
  • Memory problems
  • Flashbacks
  • Insomnia/Trouble sleeping
  • Low sense of self-worth
  • Hopelessness
  • Relationship/Marital problems
  • Aggression
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Exhibiting self-destructive behavior (self-harm or substance abuse)
